How to Make a Dinner at Home Feel Special

How to Make Dinner at Home Feel Special (Without Making It a Huge Production)

I love having people over.

I do not love the idea that having people over means spending two days cleaning your house, cooking seventeen things and being so exhausted by the time everyone arrives that you'd quite like them all to leave.

Dinner at home can be incredibly simple and still feel really special.

Lay the table before you do anything else

This is my favourite trick.

Do it in the morning.

Once the table is laid, something psychological happens. Dinner is happening. The house already feels ready and you've removed one job from that slightly frantic half hour before everyone arrives.

Don't underestimate a tablecloth

You can put exactly the same plates and glasses you use every day onto a beautiful piece of linen and suddenly everything feels different.

Don't iron it within an inch of its life either. I like linen looking like linen.

Put something down the middle

Not necessarily flowers.

A huge bowl of lemons. A few branches from the garden. Little pots of herbs. Bowls of tomatoes. A collection of candles.

It doesn't need to cost very much — it just needs to look intentional.

Serve food generously

There is something lovely about food arriving at the table in big dishes and everyone helping themselves.

It immediately relaxes things.

Bread on the table, butter in a proper little dish, water in a jug. None of this is complicated, but together it creates that feeling of abundance that makes a dinner table so inviting.

And light the candles

Even if it's still light outside.

Especially if it's still light outside.

Then put some music on, pour yourself something before everyone arrives and stop rearranging things.

Nobody is coming to inspect your house.

They're coming to eat, drink, laugh and spend time with you.

The table is simply where you make that happen.
